Achieving peak sterility and efficiency in your operating room starts with the right tools, and your choice of a two-tier back table cover for your Double-decker table is no exception. Key factors like absorbency, puncture resistance, and usability play a critical role in maintaining a sterile environment. By prioritizing these elements, you can contribute to your OR team’s efficiency and enhance your sterility standards.

The ORS disposable two-tier back table cover was engineered to meet the high standards required by Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), The Joint Commission (TJC), and The Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC). In this article, we will go over why a “perfect fit” drape is key to improving both sterility and efficiency for your OR team.

The Role of Blue Drapes in Surgical Environments

While there are many types of sterile drapes used in surgical environments, this article focuses on those specifically designed to ensure sterility of surfaces and instruments during operations.

In the OR, sterile drapes are used to maintain a sterile field by covering any surface that comes into contact with sterile instruments or materials. This includes furniture and equipment, such as mayo stands, instrument tables, and back tables. Typically, these drapes are made from a variety of laminate and SMS materials, all of which are sterilized prior to the procedure.

When using a two-tier OR back table, maintaining sterility on both table surfaces is achieved through a custom-fitted drape. To ensure sterility, this drape is typically constructed into a single piece and made from materials chosen by the manufacturer based on their specific standards.

What are Perfect Fit™ Drapes?

Perfect Fit™ drapes are just that – an engineered drape that is a ‘perfect fit’ for your OR Specific (ORS) Double-decker back table. Designed for OR use, our unique absorbent Perfect Fit™ drapes create a continuous sterile field with enhanced visibility due to the innovative clear plastic backdrop that allows light into the main table surface.

To meet the needs of any surgical environment, Perfect Fit™ back table drapes are available in two options: Standard and Heavy Duty. Both deliver exceptional barrier protection, absorbency, and durability, making them ideal for a wide range of procedures.

  • Standard Back Table Drapes: The ORS standard blue drape features a 9 mil thick two-layer laminate system with a absorbent polyethylene runner. Drapes are available in cases of 10 for tables sized from 4 to 6 feet in length.
  • Heavy Duty Back Table Drapes: The heavy-duty blue drape features an advanced, three-layer laminate system. At 28 mil thick, these drapes provide premium barrier protection, tear & puncture resistance, and a high-capacity absorbent layer. This drape is accepted by the most discerning OR staff as a “stand-alone” drape when considering potential strike-through. Available in cases of 10 for all of our ORS Double-decker surgical instrument tables.
  • International Back Table Drapes: For our international customers, OR Specific offers The Perfect Fit™ back table covers with the CE mark. These drapes include the same features as our heavy-duty drapes, but are constructed to meet the needs of international operating room standards.

Enhancing Sterility with the ORS Drape

The Perfect Fit drape not only fits the ORS series of surgical back tables seamlessly, but it’s also designed to meet sterility and operating room standards. Its overhang on the sides and front of the table helps maintain the sterile field from the waist up, while preventing excess material from becoming caught.

Engineered for superior protection, the Perfect Fit drape features a full adhesive bond between its layers, providing exceptional barrier protection, tear and puncture resistance, and high-capacity absorbency. These unique, disposable drapes fully cover both the upper and main table surfaces.

The drapes feature a clear plastic transparent backdrop that allows light to transfer to the tables for improved visibility while maintaining a sterile environment.

Boosting Efficiency in the OR

The ORS table’s unique two-tier design provides extra space for more instruments, maximizing organization and efficiency in the operating room. Paired with the precisely engineered Perfect Fit™ drape, this setup ensures reliable protection and a continuous sterile field, allowing your team to focus on the procedure.

Draping a two-tier back table can present a steep learning curve, which is why ORS has incorporated intuitive features and an instructional video to simplify the process.

  • Folded for precision: During the drape manufacturing process, it is folded in a specifically to maintain surface sterility during the donning process. Once unfolded, the areas that are allowed to be touched are clearly marked with orange dots to allow donning to be done by a fully gowned and gloved technician or a scrub tech.
  • No Tenting Zone: The strategically placed Velcro tabs prevent the upper portion of the drape from sagging onto the lower tier, maximizing space on the main table surface and maintaining sterility standards.
  • Improved Visibility: The drape’s unique clear back allows light to pass through. For electric -L or -ADJ-E tables, the LED light shines brightly through, providing optimal illumination.

With these features, you can ensure a seamless and sterile draping experience, even in the most demanding surgical environments. For a more in-depth look at our Perfect Fit™ draping procedure, check out our educational video here

Cost Savings

The ORS two-tier table cover provides significant cost savings across three key areas:

  • Time Savings: Time is money. Faster setup and turnover in your operating rooms directly translate to cost savings. With the Perfect Fit™ drape and our Double-decker back table system, you can streamline both. The drape includes intuitive setup stickers, making preparation quick and easy, while also offering optimal protection during procedures. This helps improve staff efficiency and minimizes OR turnover time.
  • Materials Savings: Our heavy-duty table cover delivers exceptional protection, puncture resistance, and high-capacity absorbency. This eliminates the need to double drape your flat-top, two-tier back table, saving you money on additional materials typically required in the operating room.
  • Availability & Logistics: ORS maintains stock of the Perfect Fit™ drape at both our headquarters in Washington and at our manufacturing partner, Polk Vocational Services, in North Carolina. This ensures quicker shipping times and optimized logistics, allowing for reliable inventory management and faster delivery to your facility.

Overall, the ORS two-tier table drape offers substantial cost savings by improving time efficiency, reducing material waste, and ensuring reliable product availability. By streamlining the setup and turnover process, the Perfect Fit™ drape enhances staff productivity and minimizes downtime. Its heavy-duty construction eliminates the need for extra draping, saving on material costs.
